Wedding
Dress Alterations:
What You Need to Know
Whether a bridal
dress needs only minor adjustment or a major one, in almost every
case, wedding dress alterations will be required before your wedding
dress fits you properly. Its important to pay as much atention to its
alteration, as to selecting the dress itself.
Most bridal salons
offer wedding dress alteration services, however, when you have your
wedding dress altered through a salon it often costs much more than
if you were to arrange the alterations with a seamstress on your own.
This is because the bridal salons typically take a mark-up on the
work. To save money, you can find an experienced seamstress to do
your wedding dress alteratins instead of having them done through the
bridal salon.
Here are some tips:
1. Where to go:
Take your wedding dress to a professional seamstress of tailor,
specifically with years of experience in restyling and alterating
wedding dresses. Usually professional bridal alteration shops are the
best option since they have the expertise and the experience. Ask
newly married friends to give you recommendations to help you choose
a good wedding dress alterations professional. You might also want to
try contacting local bridal consultants to see if they can recommend
someone. Word of mouth really helps. Alteration of a wedding dress is
a work of art, which requires a great deal of detailing and
precision. The more you know about the alterationist you choose, the better.
2. Alteration
work: There are three main types of wedding dress alterations:
hemming, bodice alterations and shortening of sleeves. Normally
alterations of wedding dresses are based on three fittings. Proper
scheduling for each fitting is important. Shoes, head dress, wedding
day under garments and the other accessories should be bought before
going for the wedding dress alterations. Its important to wear the
same shoes and undergarments for each fitting as you will be wearing
on the wedding day.
3. Cost: The cost
of wedding dress alterations will depend upon the style of the dress
and the complexity of work. Expect your wedding dress alterations to
cost a few hundreds dollars. Sounds like a lot, but it's worth it.
Without the alterations, your wedding dress will not have the proper
fit, and without the proper fit the money you've already spent on the
wedding dress will be wasted because it will simply not look right.
It is advisable to get a written estimate of the total cost of
alterations in advance of having any work done. Also keep in mind
that rush services generally cost double.
4. Deadline: Many
brides do not realize how long it can take to have alterations
completed. You should take your wedding dress in for alterations at
least 6 or 8 weeks before your wedding since it is complex and time
consuming work. Generally three fittings will be required during the
alteration process.
